This is known as a Davenport Captains Desk. This European piece of furniture was probably made in Spain, in approximately the late 1780's. The desk belonged to the Captain of a Spanish Vessel that traveled from Spain to the New Land (America). What is magnificent, is that this European piece of furniture has decorative corbels that hold the lid in place and are carved in the relics of ancient American birds on a tree limb. The marquetry (wood inlay) is astonishing, the intricate carvings give this desk a unique beauty of it's own. On the right side of the desk there are four drawers each with a brass lock and original key. On the left side, there are four faux drawers (false drawers). The reason being is that the living quarters on an old ship were very small (even the captains lodge), so they had to utilize as much space as possible. The desk sits on four bunned feet. The top lid has beautiful inlay with a leather top. There is also a second lid that is risen above the leather top, as seen in photo. This magnificent relic is beyond being extremely rare. The desk is not yet priced.
